Albert's elder brother, Ray
Albert was the half brother of Raymond John Ball (VX41479) who was also a member of 2/3 Fld Coy, RAE, and who'd previously served in the Middle East/ North Africa campaigns, and later in Borneo before returning to Australia.
My father, Ray, also had two step brothers and a cousin in the AIF: John James Farmer (VX27568, 2/23 Battalion, KIA at Tobruk), Patrick Joseph Ball (V47842, 2/35 Battalion) and Walter James Ellen (VX40091, 2/23 Battalion, KIA Tobruk). When I was very young, he told me that he'd witnessed his brother's death, which I assumed was John, but which I later understood to be Albert, since they were in the same unit in New Guinea where Albert died.
