Hugh Eric “Tib” was born in Fremantle in 1897. He enlisted at Perth on the 30.10.16, aged 19 years having previously served for 3 years with the Naval Cadets. He was a Cattle Drover and Presbyterian. His father was the Rev Robert Hanlin of 83 Queen Victoria Rd, Fremantle. Hugh is described as being 5 feet 11 ½ inches tall with a chest measurement of 38-40 inches, fresh complexion, brown eyes and brown hair. Initially a Private with service number 37713, he was appointed a Gunner on 25.1.17 at Maribyrnong served with the Field Artillery Brigades, 112 Howitzer Battery. Hugh embarked on HMAT 15 – “Port Sydney” – in Melbourne 9.11.17, disembarking at Suez, then from Alexandria he travelled to Tarano. He was wounded in action in France on 4.7.18 and invalided to the UK on 8.7.18 with a gunshot wound to his left forearm. Hugh returned to Australia on the 28.2.19 per Anchises A16. He disembarked at Albany on the 7.4.19 and discharged on the 4.5.19. He married Sybil Scott Foreman in 1927. Hugh died on the 5.10.1967 in Applecross, aged 64 and his ashes were placed in the family grave, Fremantle Cemetery Presbyterian Mon E Grave 0082.
