AUSTRALIAN BOY SO SINCERE, FAITHFUL IN ACTION IN HONOUR CLEAR
Rupanyup Man Died of
Wounds
The sad news was received by Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Cordes, of Rupanyup, from the Minister for the Army, that their eldest son, Lance-Corporal Arch. Cordes, had died of wounds in Egypt on July 17. He was amongst the Australian soldiers sent to assist in checking the advance of Field-Marshal Rommel's army into Egypt. L/Cpl. Cordes, who was 23 years of age, was a native of Rupanyup district, and prior to the outbreak of war was a member of the First Armoured Car Regiment. He enlisted in 1940 and was farewelled at Rupanyup in March, 1941, sailing for overseas shortly after, and had seen active service in Syria and other theatres of war in the Middle East. He was a fine type of young man, and prior to enlistment was engage in farming pursuits with his father. He was a keen cricketer and a prominent member of the Ashens club. He was well known and highly esteemed throughout the district and was a grandson of Mrs. F. C. Cordes and nephew of Mr. E. Cordes, both of Murtoa. He is survived by his parents, two sisters, Gwen (Mrs G. A. Nelson) and Doreen, and one brother, Dave. Deep sympathy has been extended to the bereaved family and relatives.
