106 years ago today, on the 26th November 1915, Private Edward William Redfern, 13th Battalion (Reg No-1367), cashier (H. T. Lucerne, Strand Butchery, Hunter Street, Newcastle, N.S.W.) from 20 Scott Street, Newcastle, New South Wales, Died of Wounds received at Gallipoli (1.30 A.M.), age 19.

No Roll of Honour circular submitted.

Born at Wallsend, New South Wales on the 7th April 1896 to Edward William (died 1924) of 48 Scott Street, Newcastle, N.S.W. and Ethel (died 1933) Redfern nee Selwood, Edward enlisted October 1914 at Liverpool, N.S.W.

At the time of enlistment, he was serving in the Naval Reserves.

Admitted to hospital 23.6.1915 (influenza).
Wounded in action 7.8.1915 (GSW left leg, fractured femur, dangerously ill).

Edward is resting at Chatby War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt. Row B Grave 60.

Mr. Redfern’s name has been inscribed on the Cooks Hill Superior Public School Roll of Honour, Newcastle East Public School Roll of Honour (photo, unveiled on the 25th April 1917, 61 names originally inscribed, 83 names now inscribed, only 5 names denoted as Fallen), Gardner Memorial and the Book of Gold.

There is no memorial inscription on the Redfern headstone to tell us of the supreme sacrifice of their son during The Great War, so June 2021 I placed a memorial cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite, taken a photo of the memorialised grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service.
