Son of James Osborne and Rosetta Osborne of Walter Street, Ascot Vale, Melbourne, Victoria.
On 24 April 1919 Joseph married Ada Louisa Kendall in St. Cuthbert's Parish Church, Sheffield, England. Vicar Alfred Farrow officiated.
Commenced return to Australia on 12 July 1919 aboard HT Indarra disembarking on 6 September 1919
