AN AUSTRALIAN DEVOTED TO HIS HOME AND COUNTRY

On the night of 11th June, an aircraft and crew captained by Sergeant F.W.R.Green, a fellow Australian, and in which Ken was a Navigator, took off to carry out a bombing attack on enemy terrirtory on Dusseldorf.  This flight represented one of the many fighting and courageious efforts called for from the Royal Air Force in this war, and it was undertaken with efficiency and resolution for which Sergeant Fletcher had quickly become noted in the Squadron.  This aircraft took off at 23.14 hours carryng 2 x 500lbs G.P. bombs, 4 S.B.C. 8 c 30, 3 S.B.C. 19 x 4 also 750 gallons of fuel which allowed 7 - 8 hours flying time, and has not been heard of since.

Sergeant Observer Kenneth E Fletcher, RAAF, eldest son of Mr and Mrs G. E. H. Fletcher, Corinda, is presumed to have lost his life as a result of air operations over Germany on June 12 last. Ken Fletcher was a prominent cricketer of the Western Suburbs Club, and at the age of 16 years represented his club in the A grade competition. He continued playing A grade with Western Suburbs up to the time of his leaving for overseas with the RAAF in April, 1942. He was educated at the Sherwood State School and the Brisbane Grammar School, and was an officer of the Postmaster-General's Dept., Brisbane.
