Son of Kenneth Robert Basil and Martha May Gambling, of Footscray, Victoria, Australia.

Private George Ernest Gambling enlisted at the end of May 1940 and initially served with the 2/2nd Australian Medium Regiment in Australia before joining the 2nd/21st Australian Infantry Battalion. In October 1941 he was admitted to hospital with appendicitis and later embarked for overseas service on 13 December 1941, disembarking a few days later in Ambon. He was listed as killed in action on 15 January 1942 at Ambon.
