Son of Joseph Bernard and Gladys Lenora Giblin, of Kensington, South Australia.  Educated at Marist Brothers' College Norwood, Bernard played football and was fond of dancing.  In civilian life he was employed at A.M. Bickfords, Wholesale Chemists, in the drug department for some time and joined the AIF in February 1940.  Training at Wayville, he left for England in May 1940 and spent six months there, and then left for the Middle East.  Served in Tobruk and took prat in desert fighting.
