Biography

When Zebulun Green was born on January 30, 1896, in Broomehill, Western Australia, his father, George, was 28 and his mother, Bridget, was 32. He married Helena Mena Sweetman on January 2, 1920, in Perth, Western Australia. They had six children in 10 years. He died on May 31, 1943, in Queensland, at the age of 47, and was buried in Adelaide River, Northern Territory.

Date of Birth on Army documents given as 1 December 1895

His family say Zeb was an expert roller skater and welter-weight boxer.  Also he was very musical and could play any instrument he picked up.

His son Geoffrey recalls his father telling him that he and his brother George, were both good roller skaters - they could both jump three crates high.  Together they used to travel to Perth to participate in skating competitions which one or the other usually won.  They used to "pick up" young women to teach them to skate.

According to Geoffrey, Zeb took up 1500 acres of Soldier Settlement land east of Carnamah.  His father gave him a team of horses at Broomehill which he drove to Carnamah to start work on his land.  He cleared the land with an axe and lived off the bush eating kangaroo & duck etc.  He had the property cleared and fenced when the land became salted!  By 1926 only 400 acres of land remained workable, so the family left.

After leaving, Zeb went wheat lumping and took any jobs that were available.  When the wheat lumping cut out, through the depression, he worked on the roads.  In the depression, road work provided sustenance - married men worked 2 weeks and had 1 week off, single men worked 1 week and had 1 weeks off.   Zeb had the first tipper truck, a Chev 4 working on the roads.  Evidently to get the tipper working you had to back up fast to a log, where the sudden stop caused the back of the truck to tip up and the load would slide off.  To reset the truck you drove forward, fast, and then braked suddenly and the tray slid back into position.

On one occasion when the "Whites versus the Blacks" football game was on in Carnamah Zeb blackened himself and played with the blacks.  He swore later when he tried to scrub off the black shoe polish.

Before WW1 Zeb was employed by the State Railways and between the wars he eventually returned to work for the railways.

In WW1 Zeb was not obedient so he was not popular with the Officers.  Evidently at one stage he was made Batman to Colonel Applebee.  This was not quite what Zeb expected of army life.  There was a very important parade on so Zeb cleaned the Colonel's saddle with brown shoe polish.  The end result was the Colonel's white pants got very dirty and Zeb was relieved of Batman duties.  Another family member tells how when Zeb was on guard duty one night, a very senior English Officer (? Col Sweetapple) approached the guard (Zeb) and when challenged refused to give the password.  As a result was hit by Zeb.

Geoff recalls also his father saying that he visited his Saunders relations when he was in the UK during the first war.  It is possible that the Saunders in Three Springs are related.

When Geoff joined up for WW11 so did Zeb!

His war record was researched by grand nephew Andrew Baxter.

WW1 - Enlisted.  He volunteered for 10th LH regiment and was alloted as 2nd reinforcement to the regiment.  His regimental particulars were 726 Trooper ZebularGreen, C Troop, C Squadron, 10th Regiment, 3rd Light Horse Brigade, 1st Australian Imperial Forces.  The information was easy to obtain as he was the only Z Green to enlist in the 1 AID and secondly has  was awarded the Military Medal - in the original citation his name was misspelt.

Gallopoli - He landed at Gallipoli near Plugge's Plateau on 21 May 1915.  He was wounded at the charge at Nek' (the charged portrayed in the movie 'Gallipoli').  The battle took place on 7 August 1915, by the 8th & 10th LH regiments.  The regiments charged across 30 - 40 yards along a narrow piece of ground, under flanking and frontal fire of approx. 30 machine guns.  They suffered heavy casualties - the 8th LH lost 240 men, 3/4 of their strength, including the Commanding Office Colonel White.  The 10th LH lost 136 men - roughly over half their strength.  This was one of the bravest charges that ever took place. The first wave comprised of the 8th LH, they had no idea of what would happen when they left their trench.  Some say they actually entered the enemy trench.  By the time the 2nd wave, comprising A & B Squadrons 10th LH charged, there was no doubt that they would not suceed and everyone who charged would either be killed or wounded.  The 3rd wave to charge comprised C Squadron and the remainder of B Squadron. These men had now seen at least 300 men mowed down before them, on a piece of ground no bigger than a tennis court.  As a member of C Squadron, Zeb Green was one of those men and somewhere on that small patch of soil he was wounded.

Jordan - During the desert campaign 1916 - 1918 he was awarded the Military Medal for bravery under fire on three separate occasions.  It is the researcher's belief that if the author of the citation had better literacy skills or included more detail, the award may have been higher.

Citation for Military Medal -  726 Trooper Zebular Green. Trooper Green has displayed great bravery on several occasions during the recent operations.  He was one of the advance patrol that forced the ford over the JORDAN above JISR BENAT YAKUB on 27 September 1918, in the face of heavy machine gun and rifle fire.  Here Trooper VIVEASH was mortally wounded when Trooper GREEN utterly disregarding his own personal safety, carried him under cover, rendered first aid and then continued on his task.  At SASA on the early morning of 30th September 1918 he reconnoitred at great personal risk the enemy's position and gave information which led to the final scouting of the German rear guard.  Again on 1st October, 1918 in opposition against the enemy rear guard at DUMA on the DAMASCUS- ALLEPPO road, GREEN was in the forefront of the squadron's attack through, where by his personal dash and bravery, he did much toward the final capture of the enemy's rear guard.

(From the Central Army records Office compiled 22 Feb 1988.)

WWII - Zeb served in WWII - overseas at one stage, then was returned to Australia to be discharged on medical grounds.  He immediately enlisted in the ACMF and was killed in a MVA while in the Australian Army Labour Service, ACMF 7 Employment Company training Chinese in Mt Isa 31/5/1943.

It is said in the army he wore three dog tags: one to say he was RC for his mother; one to say he was SDA for his wife; and one to say he was a BB (Bush Baptist) for himself.

For his army service he was awarded:

Military Medal,  1914/15 Star, British War Medal 1914 -1920, Victory Medal 1914 - 1918, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939 - 1945, Australian Service Medal 1939 - 1945, ANZAC Commemorative Medalion.
