Prior to enlistment Bert was employed as a Bolt Dresser. He was previously married to Helen Ada Smith Guest (1902-1968)(nee Towers) and divorced prior to enlistment.
Bert was the fifth child of seven born to Jack (John) Henry Guest (1862-1922) and Annie Caroline Guest (1868-1922) (nee Allison) and a grandson of John Kidd Guest (1831-1871) and Matilda Guest (1835-1884) of 34 Leveson Street Hotham (North Melbourne) formerly of Ireland.
He was killed from wounds suffered in Syria. His sister Lucy Adelaide Chalwell (1898-1987) (nee Guest), wife of William Chalwell was named as his next of kin.
Lucy was excutor to his will along with their sister Annie May Handel (1904-1996) (nee Guest).
