Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks
Hercules Lionel 'Bob' Clarke enlisted the same day as his younger brother, 1593A Pte. Julius Ordo Clarke and they both ended up in the 19th Battalion a few weeks before the Second Battle of Bullecourt. Julius was killed in action on 3 May 1917, age 22, and ‘Bob’ Clarke died of wounds the very next day.
A third brother, 5993 Pte William Reginald Quintus 'Reg' Clarke, 2nd Battalion, survived the war and returned to Australia in January 1919.
‘Bob’ Clarke’s father noted on his Roll of Honour form, “The deceased was of fine physique and of jovial disposition, being a good comedian and imitator of Harry Lauder's character songs.”
