James enlisted 7 September 1914, an original of G Company 2nd Battalion, age 23, embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, 18 October 1914. He was severely wounded during the landing on Gallipoli with bomb wounds to the head. He was evacuated to Egypt, arriving on the 29 April 1915. He died of his wounds over 6 weeks later, 14 June 1915.

He enlisted from Stockinbingal but the family had originated in Hay NSW and his family was living at Kenmore, Goulburn during the war.

His brother, 3480 Sergeant Albert Edwin Sykes 13th Battalion AIF died of wounds 5 February 1917, age 22.

A third brother, 6641A Private Robert Leonard Sykes 17th Battalion AIF, was killed in action 9 August 1918, age 24.

A fourth older brother, 2776 Sergeant Walter William Sykes of the 55th Battalion AIF was the only one of the four brothers to return to Australia, but died in 1923, age 37.
