George Hardy de Beauvoir HAMMOND was born in Sydney on 30th July, 1917

His parents were Otto de Beauvoir HAMMOND & Beatrice Sarah Geraldine BROWNING who married in Sydney in 1911

He previously served in the RAF (UK) from 1939-40 and was discharged to return to Australia

He enlisted on 9th October, 1942 with the Royal Australian Air Force as an Aircraftman (Air Crew) - he became a Leading Aircraftman on 2nd January, 1943 & Pilot Officer on 29th July, 1943, & a Flying Officer on 29th January, 1944  - he received his Flying Badge on 23rd July, 1943

George died in a flying battle over the Artlantic Ocean/North Sea on 1st November, 1944 when his plane, a Bristol Beaufighter NT 915 UB-Y collided with 489 Squadron Royal New Zealand Air Force Beaufighter and crashed into the sea off Norway

At the time he was a pilot with 455 Squadron RAAF in the Coastal Command at the RAF Station in Langham, UK

His name is memorialised on the Australian War Memorial, the Runnymede Memorial in Surrey, England and the Roll of Honour in Mosman, SYdney
