Biography contributed by Ingrid F

"HIS, THE SACRIFICE OURS, THE PRIDE AND SORROW".

Norman John HARRINGTON was the son of Juanita B. (nee WINDRED) and John HARRINGTON.

His Grandparents fondly called him 'Ray', as seen in their Memoriam notice on the first anniversary of his death in Papua.

After his mother died in 1920, Norman and his three sisters (Gwendoline Norah HARRINGTON, Madge Angeline (nee WINDRED) BURNS and Stella. E. WINDRED) were brought up by one of Juanita's Aunties: Muriel Glover (nee SMITH) and her husband Richard RAY, in Leichardt, NSW. Muriel and Ray became 'Mum and Dad' as Foster Parents and Adoptee Parents.

Norman's mother's side of the family were from England and settled around Molong and Bathurst in the 1820s.

Norman was living in Leichhardt and employed as a Motor Lorry Driver at the time of Enlistment in the AIF in 1939.

Norman served in campaigns in the African Desert and Papua New Guinea. He was injured in Papua and died of the wounds received. He's buried at the Port Moresby (Bomana) War Cemetery.

So far, searching the old papers on TROVE, there doesn't seem to be an Honour Roll or official notice about Norman's death in 1942.

On the the first anniversary of his passing, family and friends all placed their messages of love and loss in the 'In Memoriam - On Active Service' section. A copy has been added to this site.
