Flight Sergeant Hayes 401090 in Kittyhawk FS482 of 3SQN was killed when his aircraft was hit by AA fire and crashed into the sea offshore from San Benedetto - his body was not recovered and he is commemorated on the Malta Memorial, Panel 16, column 1

He was in a group of twelve aircraft that took off from Cutella airfield to strafe sixty railway trucks reported south of San Benedetto. At the railway yards twenty trucks in a line were strafed by the formation but they experienced medium to intense Breda flak fire, some of which took down FS482
