Biography contributed by Modbury High School

Conrad Cordt Heier was born on the 2nd of May 1896, in Port Pirie, South Australia. He was a gardener in Ardrossan, Yorke Peninsula. Heier enlisted when he was 20 years and 11 months and was 5’10. He weighed 158 lbs and had hazel eyes with light brown hair. He died on the 21st of February 1977 of natural causes at the age of 81. His parents were Cord Heier and Henrietta Munt, but after their passing John Heier was his guardian. He had a younger sister Sophie Harriett Heier.

Before enlistment he had a 3 year training in the Senior Cadets and 2 years in the Citizen Forces Light Horse. It was the 23rd Light house and belonged to the Tea Tree Gully trope. Heier enlisted on the 23rd of October 1916 in Adelaide and was involved on the 5th of February 1917. He was in the 9th Light Horse Regiment. Heier embarked on the HMAT Clan MacCorquodale on the 5th of September 1917. He was discharged on the 18th of September 1919. He later reenlists for World War 2 on the 23rd of April 1942 in the Volunteer Defence Crops (SA) for homeland defence. He was discharged on the 15th of August 1943. After the war, Heier has suffered Chronic Right Otitis Media with defective hearing and epilepsy. He also moved from South Australia to Pintharuka, Western Australia.

The 9th Light Horse Regiment was formed in Adelaide and trained in Melbourne, deployed to Egypt in 1915 as part of the 3rd Light Horse Brigade. Initially unsuitable for operations at Gallipoli, the regiment was deployed without their horses. The regiment played a defensive role until it left the peninsula on 20 December 1915. In Egypt, the 3rd Light Horse Brigade became part of the ANZAC Mounted Division and participated in the Suez Canal defense from a Turkish drive across the Sinai Desert. The regiment was involved in the capture of Maghdaba and Rafa, and the operation that led to Gaza's fall. The Turkish position in southern Palestine collapsed, and the regiment participated in the pursuit that led to the capture of Jerusalem. British operations then moved to the Jordan Valley, where the 9th Light Horse was involved in the Es Salt raid, which convinced the Turks that the next offensive would be launched along the coast. The regiment participated in the capture of Jenin and Sasa, entered Damascus, and surrendered to the Turks. The regiment was called back to operational duty to quell the Egyptian revolt in March 1919 and returned home on 10 July 1919.
