Sergeant Hills was killed in a grenade explosion during training at the Aircrew Officer & NCO School at Watsonia army base, the incident occurred during hand grenade throwing practice, which is part of the defence section of the course given at the school.
As one of the airmen was about to throw the grenade it slipped from his hand and exploded before warning could be given. Thirteen sergeants were injured, two seriously: Sergeant Guy 440040 who was discharged in March 1945 & Sergeant McDonald 440452 who was discharged in May 1945
