Vincent was the youngest of two children of Joseph James Hooper Snr (born 1878 in Gympie, QLD) and Jessie Louisa Guard (born 1888 in Gympie, QLD). Joseph - a Miner at Mount Pleasant - married Jessie in 1910 at Gympie in QLD. Joseph and Jessie settled in Gympie where they raised their family - Joseph died in 1939 and Jessie in 1974.

Vince was a Labourer in Gympie QLD when he enlisted in the AMF and served as a Private (Service No:QX3201) with 2nd 15th Infantry Battalion. Completing training in Palestine in early 1941, Vince fought in the Western Desert and Tobruk before returning to Australia for jungle training. The 2nd/15th Infantry Battalion arrived in Milne Bay in August 1943, and Vince fought in the final stages of the Salamaua - Lae Campaign. He was KiA on 24 September 1943. Older brother Joseph (Joe) James Hooper (Leading Aircraftman, Service No:78538) served with the RAAF in WWII (Australia based).
