Charles Edwards Ricketts was born in September 1883 in Cricklade, Swindon England and moved to Australia. Ricketts was a carpenter before the war, and he was an apprentice to his father for 6 years. Ricketts had not served in the military before and was not married. His father was his next of kin should Charles die in the war.

Charles Edward Ricketts enlisted on the 2nd of March 1915 in Keswick South Australia for WW1 and completed his medical check on the same day. Ricketts embarked for WW1 from Adelaide aboard HMAT Geelong on the 31st of May 1915. While fighting in Gallipoli Charles was given Fatigue for 3 days for disobeying orders. Then Ricketts was moved from Gallipoli to Alexandria and then Alexandria to England on the 10th of January 1916. Ricketts was originally assigned to the 27th Infantry Battalion but was then moved to the 2nd Pioneer Battalion on the 8th of March 1916 and was moved to France. On the 12th of December 1917 Ricketts was promoted from private to corporal to complete establishment in France. Ricketts was moved to London for an instruction course from July 1918 to August 14th July 1918. He also commanded on the 29th of July 1918 for a anti-gas course. Ricketts was then discharged on the 2nd of May 1919 due to cessation of hostilities.
