Warrant Officer John William Kinder 205622 of Number 1 Squadron RAAF was one of 2400 Allied POWs held in the Sandakan POW camp until 1945.  He took part in the death marches and was one of the six men out of the 1047 to survive to the village of Ranau, 250 km away

On 10 June 1945 Warrant Officer Kinder died as a POW at Ranau
