VX30813 Acting Lance Corporal Francis Gordon Kirkpatrick served with the 2/22nd Australian Infantry Battalion, was captured at Rabaul and died as POW 1 July 1942 aboard the Japanese ship "Montevidio Maru”, age 25.

Francis’s father 4150 Cpl. Gilbert Andrew Kirkpatrick M.M. 39th Battalion AIF, died of wounds in 1918, without ever getting the chance to meet his son. Francis was born in August 1916, some five months after his father had left Australia to fight in the first Great War.
