Son of Henry Albert and Stella May Knowles; husband of Alice Knowles, of St. Kilda, Victoria.

Raymond Albert Knowles was a 24 year old Taxi Driver from St. Kilda, Melbourne before his enlistment into the Australian Citizen Military Forces on 26 March 1942.  Attached to 20 Australian General Transport Company as a Driver, he transferred to the Australian Imperial Force in August 1942 and was posted to Tocumwal.

On the evening of 30 Decmeber 1942, Raymond boarded an Army truck, taken without authorisation, along with six other men travelling to Finley.  One mile from the base on a bumpy gravel road, the intoxicated driver lost control on a corner and the truck overturned killking Private Knowles.
