Son of Noel Fulford Learmonth and Edith Mary Learmonth, of Tyrendarra, Victoria, Australia.

GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS

John was taken prisoner of war 30th May 1941 at Kreta, Germany and interred at Hautausschlage.

He committed suicide when he threw himself froma window approximately 50 feet down to the roadway below and thus received injuries which proved fatal.  At the time his mind was temporarily unbalanced and was not responsable for his actions. 

LIEUT. J. N. LEARMONTH, missing is eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Noel Learmonth Tyrendarra. He was educated at Ivanhoe and Geelong GS's and was sub-accountant in Australian Estates Ltd. He is a  member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce and the MCC Rifle Club. He was in the Militia before enlisting at outbreak of war. He was in England for some months and later fought in Greece and was  evacuated to Crete.His brother is an RAAF Officer.

The death is reported of Lieut John Learmonth, suddenly in a POW camp in Germany. Lieut Learmonth is a second cousin of Mr Basil Learmonth, of the Gloucester Hotel, Albury, and was captured at  Retime (Crete), In the closing days of the island's defence. His parents are Mr and Mrs Noel Learmonth.
