Son of William Thomas Low and Mary Ann Low, of Torwood, Queensland, Australia; husband of May Low.

EVER REMEMBERED

John Hunter Low was born on the 29th of November 1901 (or 1900 according to Queensland births deaths and marriage records), in Mount Morgan, Queensland to William and Mary Low. He briefly served with the militia in 1931. John married his fiancée Dorothy May Hedges on the 5th of January 1932 and had one daughter Beryl May Low born on the 25th of March 1932.

John was working as a railway ganger when he enlisted in the Australian Army on the 21st of June 1941 as Private soldier. From the time of his enlistment till early January 1942 he completed basic training. He left Sydney on the 10th of January 1942 to arrive in Singapore on the 24th of January 1942 to serve with the 2/20th Battalion.

He was only there for fifteen days before the Battle of Singapore started 8th of February 1942 and he was captured at the Fall of Singapore on the 15th of February 1942 and entered captivity as a Prisoner of War. He was imprisoned at a Prisoner of War Camp at Kanburi, Thailand which worked on the infamous Burma-Siam railway. Within seventeen months of imprisonment, John died of dysentery on the 1st of June 1943.

John was buried at the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery in Thailand, at the bottom of his gravestone reads “Ever Remembered”.  He was survived by his wife and daughter.
