Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Son of George Frederick and Christiana Agnes Markham, of Kyabram, Victoria, Australia.

OUR ONLY SON GOD CALLED HIM "THY WILL BE DONE"

Mr. and Mrs. G. F. Markham, Kyabram, have been officially advised that their son, Private George Markham, who was serving in the Middle East, is missing. The telegram from the Minister for the Army,  stated: —
“I regret to inform you that G. A. W. Markham. has been posted missing on October 31. The Minister for the Army extends sincere sympathy.”

Private George Markham
Kyabram and district residents weredeeply grieved to learn of the sad news received last week by Mr. and Mrs. G. F. Markham, Kyvalley, that their only son, Private George Markham, had been killed in  the Middle East.
It seems only a few days ago since his father delightedly intimated that he had received a cable from his son which stated “All well.” But events in war move quickly and there followed the disquieting,  though hopeful, message from the" Minister for the Army, stating that George was missing, but further word intimated- that he had been killed. Thus another hero has found his Valhalla, there to join comrades of schoolboy days, who, like him, have given their all.
The late Private Markham was born at Oakleigh on March 24, 1916, and was only 26 years of age. He was educated at Kyabram Higher Elementary school. Although particulariy fond of outdoor sport, a knee in ury prevented him from participating in fild athletics. He devoted most of his spare time to the advancement of the boy scout movement in Kyabram. He was also actively associated with Kyabram rifle club and was a marksman of no mean prowess. He was also a member of the 38th Militia force and, in company with many other Kyabram boys, immediately joined up for overseas  service when the call for volunteers came. He enlisted in July, 1940, sailed in November, 1940, and arrived in the Middle East on December 22. The late Private Markham’s father, Mr. George Markham, who is president of the Kyabram Dads Association, was also a soldier and served in the last great war. His sister, Lucy (Mrs. Stan Squires), whose husband is serving somewhere in Australia, is at  present residing with her parents. The deepest sympathy of Kyabram and district residents is extended to the sorrowing family in the loss they have sustained.
