26 May 1917: | Honoured Military Medal, 5126 Private Harold Robert Hunter, 24th Battalion who was an 18 year old civil servant from Wandin North, Victoria when he enlisted and embarked for overseas with the 13th Reinforcements from Melbourne on 28 July 1916 aboard HMAT Themistocles. He served in France with the 24th Battalion and the Australian Corps of Signals and was awarded a Military Medal (MM) 'for conspicuous gallantry as a signaller during the action near Bullecourt on 3 May 1917 in laying and repairing the line to the captured positions under heavy fire. This work was practically continuous and was most valuable.' After being wounded in action on 9 October 1917, he returned to his unit and later returned to Australia on 29 August 1919 |
