AIR TRAINEE'S DEATH
Night Crash In
Paddock
Death from the effects of burns received when an aircraft in which he was flying solo, crashed, was the finding of the Coroner (Mr. M. Wyse) who inquired into the death of Kevin Massey, air trainee.
F/Sgt, Alan Wallace Shilland stated that about 1.50 a.m., after giving Massey dual instruction he authorised him to fly the aircraft solo. He saw Massey make a normal take-off, and later saw an aircraft go up after attempting to land. When it rose he did not follow its flight. Flames from a burning aircraft were afterwards seen, and he went to the scene. Sq./L. Sangster, senior medical officer, said he went to a paddock and saw the remains of a burning aircraft. The body of the pilot was removed and taken to the morgue. He was unable to determine the actual cause of death. Constable Downie said he went to the scene of the accident with the Coroner. From his observations the aircraft had crash-landed from a southerly direction, continued for 48 yards, and went through a fence. The machine then caught fire. He had been unable to ascertain the cause of the aircraft crashing.
