Biography contributed by Faithe Jones
Son of George Cole Matthews and Elizabeth Jane Matthews; husband of Florence Evelyn Matthews, of Finley.
L.A.C. Matthews was killed in his home town, Finley, NSW as a result of a collison between a motor cycle ridden by him and a motor truck, the property of Hitchinson's Finley Flour Milling & Agency Co. Pty. Ltd. and driven by one, Arthur Albert Hodges. At the time, L.A.C. Matthews was returning to his Unit from leave. The accident occurred in Murray Strreet, Finley at approximately 12.20pm on Tuesday 29th December 1942. The accident has been the subject of a Court of Enquiry and from evidence gathered, it appears that the collision was due to the failure of L.A.C. Matthews to keep a proper lookout. A Coronial Enquiry has since been held at Finley and the Coroner found that no blame was attachable to the driver of the motor truck.
