Son of Henry James McCann and Elizabeth McCann, of West Leederville, Western Australia.
HIS DUTY NOBLY DONE
Private McCann was a shop assistant from West Leederville, Western Australia, prior to enlistment on 5 November 1941 when 2/11 Battalion was located in the Middle East and was withdrawn to Adelaide on 16 March 1942. The battalion remained in Australia initially to assist in the defence of Western Australia and later in northern Queensland before becoming involved in combat in West Sepik Province of New Guinea in November 1944. Pte McCann was killed in action near Wewak, Papua New Guinea, on 10 May 1945. He was aged 22 years.
