Andrew Donald Moir was born in November 1919 at Albany to parents John (Jack) Andrew and Gladys Emma Moir.
Andrew was one of seven siblings living in the regional area of Borden, Gnowangerup, Western Australia area working as a farmhand.
In October 1940 he joined the second Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) from Borden enlisting at Claremont.
Andrew enlisted with two of his cousins Lloyd and George Moir, both brothers.
On enlistment Andrew acquired WX number of 9337 with his two cousins acquiring WX9338 and WX9339.
After Andrew’s initial training he was taken on strength with the 2/4th Machine Gun Battalion attached to D Company, No 15 Platoon.
Andrew embarked for overseas in December 1941, disembarking in Singapore in January 1942 with battalion immediately put into action in the defence of Singapore from the Japanese Imperial Army that had swiftly advanced through Malaya.
It was on the night of 8 February 1942 that Andrew was believed to be killed by mortar fire when he was last seen with his vehicle.
Driver Andrew Donald Moir, service number WX9337 of 2/4 Machine Gun Battalion was killed in action at West Singapore on the 8 February 1942.
He was aged 22 years.
In was not until 1946 that Andrew’s body was located and identified where he is now buried in the Kranji War Cemetery, Singapore.
He is remembered with honour.
