Shot by RAAF sentry at Number 7 Aircraft Depot - AC Monk was climbing through a fence at the base and was challenged by a sentry. When he did not answer, the sentry fired a shot into the ground and again challenged him. Receiving no answer the sentry fired again and hit the airman.

Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Clive Weston Monk was 29 years old and working as a Materials Controller and Planner in Sydney NSW when he enlisted in the RAAF on 4 July 1944.  Initially trained as a Fitter then later as a Wireless Maintenance Mechanic, he was posted to 7AD at Tocumwal on 22 September 1945.

Around 6.45 on 4 December 1945, Clive was observed climbing through the wire fence surrounding the base.  After repeated challenge attemps with no reply from the suspected intruder, the guard fired two shots into the ground as a warning.  The second warning shot ricocheted off a rock and the bullet hit Aircraftman Monk, fatally wounding him.

Airman Shot At Tocumwal

LAC Clive Monk, of Sydney, a young member of the RAAF, was shot dead by a guard who challenged him at Tocumwal Air Force station on Tuesday night. AC1 Woolley was  patrolling the station boundary on guard duty when he saw a man climbing through a fence. He challenged him six times, but the man took no notice and Woolley, the police say,  fired two shots into the ground. One bullet richoted and hit the man, who dropped to the ground after the second shot and died almost immediately. Tocumwal police and RAAF  authorities are inquiring into the shooting. Monk was buried at Tocumwal Air Force cemetery.
