Alfred's History
Alfred Henry Mooney (better known by his nickname Chicka), was born on the 4th December 1912. He was the third son of five boys to Ethel and Matthew Mooney in Sydney Australia. The boys were very close, growing up in Bondi. They were all excellent swimmers joining the Bondi Surf Club and Bondi Icebergs at a very young age.
Before going to war he was the manager of Bussel Brothers store at Annandale
Alfred married Mona Greig at Holy Cross Church Woollahra on the 4th August 1934. They had a daughter Lorraine born 3rd July 1935.
He and two of his brothers enlisted at Paddington Sydney NSW on 31st March 1942.
He fought in conflicts primarily in the Middle East.
His unit was returning to Australia from overseas when they were redeployed to New Guinea because of problems there. He was killed on the 17th November 1943. He was first buried at Finschapen Cemetery and later transferred to Lae Cemetery.
Loved and sadly missed.
