86 years ago today, on the Wednesday afternoon of the 22nd March 1939, Private Joseph Reginald Barlow, 8th Battalion (Reg No-6799), bootmaker from 17 Havelock Street, Mayfield, New South Wales and Lockyer Street, Merewether West, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 48. ANGLICAN 1-28. 139.

Born at Lithgow, New South Wales on the 29th August 1890 to Joseph, died 24.6.1948, Mayfield, N.S.W., age 86, no funeral or death notice, and Hope Ann Barlow nee Sandell, died 28.6.1940, 17 Havelock Street, Mayfield, N.S.W., age 80; husband of Lillie May Barlow nee Cotterell, married 1925, Newcastle, N.S.W., died 14.7.1976, Newcastle, N.S.W., 37 years a widow, sleeping here, Joe enlisted on the 17th October 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT SS Port Napier on the 17th November 1916.

A report of messages in a bottle from Joe were found on a beach in South Australia dated the 19th November 1916!


Admitted to hospital 30.1.1917 (not stated), 13. 8.1917 (not stated), 21.11.1917 (not stated).

Granted leave to England from 21.3.1918 to 5.4.1918 and France from 13.2.1919 to 27.2.1919.

Commenced return to Australia 20.6.1919.

Joe arrived home on the 10th August 1919, being discharged on the 18th September 1919.

I have not located Mr. Barlow’s name inscribed on any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies at Joe’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Not officially commemorated.
