DRIVER OF TAXI ACQUITTED
Chris Malus, 39, taxi driver, was acquitted in the Quarter Sessions yesterday of a charge of the manslaughter of William John O'Connor, soldier. It was alleged that during an altercation over the hire of his taxi-cab, Malus assaulted O'Connor, causing him to fall. O'Connor died in a military hospital from a fractured skull about five dsivs later. It was alleged that while Malus was in his stationary taxi-cab in Glebe Point Road, near Francis Street, Glebe, on March 31, O'Connor approached and sought to hire the cab. When told by Malus that he was walting for his father-in-law, and could not accept him as a passenger. O'Connor, it was alleged, became abusive, and struck Malus twice on the mouth. Malus, who pleaded not guilty, denied the assault, and said that after O'Connor struck him he pushed him
away and he fell. When told by the police that O Connor had died, Malus said he was very sorry, and cried.
