PILOT-OFFICER M. J. OXLEY
Advice has been received that Pilot Officer M. J. (Jim) Oxley, of Bentleigh, has been reported missing, believed to have lost his life as a result of operations north of Australia. Several years ago the airman was attached to the staff of the Union Bank at Horsham, and whilst here was transferred to Warracknabeal. In October, 1943, he was married to Miss Coral Colliver, of Warracknabeal, who now resides at Bentleigh. In an article in the Melbourne "Herald" last Saturday, mention was made of outstanding work accomplished by Pilot-Officer Oxley against the Japanese in Bougainville. The article states: "Work of the Bommerangs had been well demonstrated last week when forward A.I.F. companies signalled base that enemy mortar fire was making things uncomfortable. They had asked if aircraft could be sent to locate the Japanese positions. Within 11 minutes of the receipt of the signal, F/O Reg. Smith, of Launceston, and P/O Oxley, of Bentleigh, had taken off, discovered the Japanese mortars, silenced them and dropped messages to that effect to the A.I.F. companies. A.I.F. air liason officers. with the R.A.A.F. stated this was one of the smartest bits of work they had ever seen"
