Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Barney was the eldest of three children of Lindsay Ernest Rudder (born 1873 at Kempsey, NSW) and Caroline Dolphin Clendennon-Smith (born 1889 in Durban, South Africa). Lindsay was a Farmer at Bellangarry, NSW when he enlisted as a Trooper (Service No:1382)with the NSW Imperial Bushmen (he had initially enlisted with NSW Citizens' Bushmens Contingent but failed to embark). Lindsay married Grace in 1905 in Cape Town, South Africa and in 1908 they arrived with son Arnold (Barney) Eugene, aged 3 years in Sydney, NSW on board the Militades. They settled at Grafton, NSW, then at Cobaki Bridge at Tweed Heads where Lindsay was a Banana Farmer.

Barney was a Motor Mechanic - living at Murwillumbah, NSW before moving to Southport, QLD where he married Nellie Hately (born 1916 at Tweed Heads, NSW) in 1935. Barney and Nellie settled at Petches Creek, Tallebudgera where Barney worked as a Labourer.

In February 1941 Barney enlisted in the RAAF as a Leading Aircraftman (Service No:24971). He was serving in New Guinea with 15 Aircraft Repair Depot as a Fitter Armourer when he was accidentally wounded on 1 November 1943 by the discharge of a .30 machine gun in the Armament Repair Section. He died of his wounds. Father Lindsay Ernest (Trooper, Service No:1382) served in the Boer War, and Brother-in-Law Lawrence Leo Casey (RAAF, Service No:24442) served in WWII.

Nellie remained in Southport, QLD and in 1962 married Returned Serviceman Henry Bernard Wells (Serice No:Q143880).
