An R.A.A.F. casualty list issued this week contains the name of Flight- Lieutenant Geoffrey Sattler, foster son of Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Roberts, of Stanmore, who was reported missing in air operations carried out on January 12. Flight-Lieutenant Sattler received his early education in Singleton. He was 29 years of age and was formerly country salesmen for the Vacuum Oil Co. at Bathurst. He enlisted at the outbreak of war.
Messrs. Claude Sattler, of Redbournberry, and E. Sattler, of Ravensworth, are uncles of Flight-Lieutenant Sattler.
No. 24 Squadron RAAF at Darwin, was reassigned to No. 13 Squadron RAAF at Ambon and was ferried to Laha airfield by Flight Lieutenant J A Hepburn. At the time only nine 13 Squadron aircraft were operational to oppose the Japanese. On 12 January 1942, A16-7 was posted as missing 'on air operations against the enemy at Manado in Celebes Islands', site of the Japanese landings on the northern Celebes. Killed in action were Flight Lieutenant Geoffrey Sattler; Sergeant John G Goode; Sergeant Reg A Hunter and Sergeant Matthew R Hodgson. Their Hudson and two others from Ambon, plus five from the RAAF advanced operational base at Namlea (on the island of Buru) had been intercepted whilst over Manado by seven A6M2 Zeros from the 3rd Kokatai, three F1M 'Pete' floatplanes and a C5M2 'Babs' reconnaissance plane. Only four Hudsons returned from this encounter
