Will Burton was one of the three sons of Samuel Ebenezer and Sarah Elizabeth Burton, of Tomago, New South Wales who enlisted in the AIF during 1915. The Burton family had come from England to Australia in around 1910.

Will’s two brothers who had enlisted together, were both killed in action. 2122 Sapper Thomas Bradbury Burton, 5th Field Company Engineers, at Pozieres 26 July 1916, and 2123 Pte Samuel Burton 20th Battalion at Estrees on 3 October 1918.

William Burton was an original member of the 35th Battalion and transferred to the 9th Machine Gun Company in the field during early 1917. He was sent to hospital with shell shock just after the Battle of Messines in June 1917. He arrived back in Australia during June 1919.
