Unfortunately very little is known about Albert "Billy" Slater's family and circumstances which led to Billy becoming the foster son of the Whinnerah family, in Albany, Western Australia nor as a foster son, how long Billy was with the Whinnerah family.

Albert Slater enlisted on 22nd October 1941, in Claremont, Western Australia, after basic training was transferred to 2nd/24th Machine Gun Battalion, E Company on 30th December 1941. On 16th January 1942, the  2nd/24th Machine Gun Battalion sailed from Fremantle aboard the  ‘Aquitania’ disembarking on 24th January 1942 at Singapore. After the Battle of Singapore, Private Albert Slater become a prisoner of war (15th February 1942). At Selarang he was selected to work onThai-Burma Railway  departing Singapore by train for Thailand on 17th March 1943.  

Private Billy Slater died at Kuii Camp, Thailand on 26 September 1943, from Beri-Beri,  six days after his 22nd birthday. He was interred in Kuii Camp Cemetery, Grave 181.
