Private Harold Edward Slater (Service No:QX21999) enlisted in the AIF on 5 July 1941 - Gunner - and was appointed to 14 Field Training Battery. On 24 January 1942, Private Slater was attached to 2/10 Field Regiment when he embarked with his Unit from Sydney for Singapore, where he was captured by the Japanese on 15 February 1942. PoW Private Slater embarked from Singapore on 14 May 1942 with 'A'Force - bound for 105 Kilo Camp and the Burma Thailand Railway. Private Slater died of illness on 5 July 1943.
Harold was born in Warwick, QLD in 1918, fifth of eight children of Thomas Gordon Slater (b1876 in Brisbane, QLD) and Mary Jane Hazlett (b1881 in Brisbane, QLD). Thomas and Mary married in Brisbane in 1898, and moved to Warwick, before settling in Brisbane by 1917. Thomas was a Labourer.
Harold worked in Cleveland via Brisbane as a Farm Labourer, and in 1936 married his first wife Thelma Muriel Ball (b1916 in Brisbane, QLD). Following Thelma's death in 1938. Harold remarried in 1940 to Doris Agnes Barton (b1919 in Brisbane, QLD). Harold was working as a Farm Labourer when he enlisted in the Army, and died in Burma in 1943. Doris later remarried and died in 2005.
