Lionel was the youngest of four children of Thomas Henry Smart (b1879 in Ararat, Victoria) and Susan (Susie) Golding Thomson (b1876 in Buninyong, Victoria). Thomas - a Miner - and Susie married in 1910 in Ararat, Victoria where they settled and raised their family.
Lionel served with the Militia (Service No:450459; March to September 1939) with 15th Field Brigade before enlisting with the Australian Army. He was a Private (Service No:VX21876) attached to 2/2 Pioneer Battalion when he died in 1940. Older brother Stuart Henry Thomson Smart also served in the Militia (Sapper; Service No:443033) and the Australian Army (Sapper; Service No:NX54281). Brothers-in-Law William John Downie (Leading Aircraftman; Service No:59750) and Keith Oswald Clyde Abson (Private; Service No:VX21285) also served in WWII.
