Arnold was the only child of Alma John Charles Smith (born 1899 in Penguin, Tasmania) and Elvinia May Loone (born 1899 in Deloriane, Tasmaia). Alma was a Farm Labourer in Penguin Tasmania in 1923 when he married Elvinia. They settled at Penguin where Alma was a Farmer.
Arnold was eighteen years of age when he enlisted in the ACMF in May 1943, He was a Private with 58.59th Infantry Battalion when he wa KiA at Bougainville on 19 May 1945. Arnold is buried at the Port Moresby (Bomana) Cemetery.
