Ernest was the eldest of five children of Stanley (Stan) Edward Frederick Smith (b1901 in Perth WA) and Edith Emily Kirkham (b1898 in Perth WA). Stan (a Horse Driver) and Emily married in 1919 in Perth WA. Stan enlisted in the AIF in March 1918 - as a seventeen year old Farm Hand, he used a false birth date - and was a Private (Service Nos:64930/56392) attached to 7 Reinforcements Egypt when he was Discharged in December 1918. Stan and Emily settled in Perth WA where they raised their family and Stan was a Horse and Truck Driver.

Ernest enlisted in the RAN in September 1939 (Ordinary Seaman; Service No:F2556/20) and served on HMAS Cerberus and HMAS Sydney. He was an Ordinary Seaman when he was KiA on board HMAS Sydney in November 1941.
