Served during The Great War, died tragically, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

91 years ago today, on the Saturday afternoon of the 2nd July 1932, Corporal Henry William Went, 53rd Battalion (Reg No-590A), railway shunter & guard (N.S.W. Railways), from Bega House, Keira Street, Wollongong, New South Wales and Mayfield, N.S.W. and Cowra, N.S.W., father of two (Allan, Marie), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 45. METHODIST 4-01. 51.

Born at Williamstown, Victoria about 1887 to Charles and Sarah Went of 2 Cox's Gardens, North Williamstown, Victoria; husband of Lillian (Lilian) Alice Went nee Hillier (married 1921, Hamilton, N.S.W., died 15.3.1980, sleeping next to Henry, 48 years a widow - METHODIST 4-01. 49), Henry enlisted on the 4th January 1916 with the 36th Battalion (Reg No-590), at Liverpool, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A72 Beltana on the 13th May 1916.
Granted leave to England on the 3rd November 1918.
Henry was invalided home on the 16th May 1919, being discharged on the 7th July 1919.

Nothing located on Trove regarding enlistment, welcome home, etc.

Mr. Went’s name has been inscribed on the Wollongong War Memorial and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name not inscribed on the NSW Government Railways and Tramways, First World War Roll of Honour.

The tragic circumstances of Henry’s death were reported: hit by Goods Train, both arms severed.

I have placed poppies at Henry’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Not officially commemorated.
