Biography

"Remember. Flying Officer Henry Douglas SUMMONS. No.77 Squadron (RAAF). Royal Australian Air Force. Missing in Action on the 25th October 1944 aged 26.

Henry Summons was born on the 24th July 1918, the son of William Henry and Elsie Agnes Summons, of Kew, Victoria. He enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force on the 27th May 1940 and trained as Fighter Pilot. On the 25th October 1944 F/O Summons was piloting a Kittyhawk (A29-821) and was leading a formation of four aircraft in an attack on Manokwari, Dutch New Guinea. For some unknown reason he suddenly opted to fly into some dense cloud and did not reappear. The remaining Pilots, who had not followed F/O Summons, searched the area but found no trace of the aircraft or its pilot. There was no reported anti-aircraft fire from the ground and no sight of any enemy fighters. After the war ended members of the RAAF Searcher Organisation made in-depth enquiries regarding the missing aircraft, but nothing could be found. Henry Summons has no known grave and his name is recorded on the Lae Memorial, Papua New Guinea." - SOURCE (scarletboy44.tumblr.com)
