Private John Ernest Tregenza's father, James Montague Tregenza moved from Timaru, New Zealand to Western Australia before 1906. In 1906 at Plantagenet, Western Australia he meet and married Mary Jane Brown and they took up farming on land in the Dangin area. John Ernest (Jack) Tregenza was the youngest son in a large family including twin sisters.
John (Jack) Tregenza enlisted 30th August 1940 in Claremont, Western Australia along with his brother Frederick Thomas Tregenza (WX9280), Fred was killed in action on the 9th February 1942 in the Battle of Singapore. Jack became a prisoner of war and eventually was selected to work on Burma-Thailand Railway, Sergeant John Ernest Tregenza Brankassi died on 2nd September 1943 at Brankassi PoW Camp and was buried in the camp's cemetery grave no. 54. On 12th February 1946 it was established and verified that he had been verbally promoted to sergeant during the downfall of Singapore, and his promotion was affirmed from 11th February 1942.
