Lieutenant Philip Ambrose TUCKEY

Lt Tuckey, formerly of Birmingham, England, was a resident of Bulwa, New Guinea when he enlisted in the New Guinea Volunteer Rifles in October 1939, attaining the rank of Sergeant. In February 1942 he was commissioned as a Lieutenant, later serving with Kanga Force, and in September was transferred to 39 Battalion. Evacuated to Australia after being wounded in action, he returned to active service in April 1943, undergoing further training at the Officer Cadet Training Unit in Townsville. In July 1943 he was transferred to the 2/14 Battalion. Lieutenant Tuckey enlisted in the 2nd AIF in September and was transferred to 1 New Guinea Infantry Battalion and promoted to the rank of Captain. Captain Tuckey was killed in action at Watam West, Ramu River, New Guinea, on 11 December 1944; he was 34 years of age.

Philip Ambrose TUCKEY was born in Birmingham, England on 28th February, 1909

His parents were George Ambrose TUCKEY & Catherine DUNN

He married Charity Hamor HERRIDGE in Sydney, NSW in 1933 - 3 children, Noel, Betty & Bill

Philip died at Watam West, Ramu River on 11th December, 1944 and is buried in the Lae War Cemetery.

His brother George Charlton TUCKEY (NGX309) also served as a Lieutenant in the Army during WW2 - he was discharged on 17th April, 1946 & was later gored by a cow & developed tetanus which caused his death on 18th June 1946
