Son of Mrs Bridget Prothero, Young PO, Young, New South Wales
Mrs. B. Prothero, of Wombat Road, Young, has now received word that her son, Corporal William Alfred Prothero, 18th Battalion, has been reported killed in action at Hangard Wood, France, on 15th April last. Corporal Prothero was in May last reported missing. About a fortnight ago, Mrs Prothero received word through the Red Cross Society that it was thought Corporal Prothero had been taken prisoner as three of his comrades say they saw him marched off together with four other men to the German lines. The news that he was killed was conveyed by Colonel Sandford, Victoria Barracks, to Very Rev. Father Hennessy this week. Corporal Prothero was one of five brothers on active service, two of whom have been invalided home, and a third, Sergeant Tom Prothero is expected home with the original Anzacs.
He enlisted in January 1915, and was 25 years of age.
