Sergeant Ward 411622 in Kittyhawk FR271 of 3SQN was killed when his aircraft was hit by intense accurate heavy and light flak and crashed near Wadi Akarit
He was part of a group of twelve Kittyhawk fighters from 3SQN that were on their way to bomb enemy troops massing for a counter attack on Allied held Wadi Akarit but they in turn were attacked by enemy aircraft and subject to overwhelming flak defences
