Herbert was 5 feet 9 inches tall had a chest measurement of 32½ - 35½ inches, fresh complexion, brown eyes and brown hair. He was a Private, initially with Service number 3686. He was appointed to the 51st Battalion. Herbert embarked on HMAT Borda at Fremantle on the 29.6.17, arrived at Tedworth Depot in England on the 4.8.17 and proceeded to France with 51st Battalion on the 20.5.18. Nine days later, his service number was changed to 3700A while he was serving in France with the 10th Rifles. On the 10.11.18 he was sent to hospital with influenza and on the 21.1.19 discharged to base.
He returned to Australia on the 31.3.19 per Khyber from Liverpool, disembarked on the 21.5.19 and was discharged on the 20.6.19.
